Getting started with AI: a practical roadmap for Australian businesses

Artificial intelligence has moved from research labs into everyday business tools, and many leaders feel pressure to “do something with AI”. The organisations that see real returns tend to follow a simple discipline: start with a clear problem, prove value on a small scale, then build on what works.

1. Identify a problem worth solving

Good first AI use cases are specific and measurable — forecasting demand, classifying incoming documents, flagging unusual transactions, or spotting defects in images. Vague goals such as “use AI to improve customer experience” are hard to deliver and harder to evaluate.

2. Check your data

Most AI projects succeed or fail on data. Ask whether you have enough relevant, accurate and accessible data for the problem. Often the first phase of an AI initiative is really a data-quality and integration project — and that work pays off well beyond the AI use case itself.

3. Run a focused pilot

Define success up front, build the smallest version that can prove it, and test it against real-world conditions. A pilot should answer a clear question: does this approach meet the accuracy, speed and cost targets we set?

  • Set a baseline: how is the task performed today, and how well?
  • Agree the metric that matters, such as accuracy, time saved or cost
  • Keep people in the loop to review outputs and handle exceptions
  • Time-box the pilot so decisions are made quickly

4. Plan for responsible use

Consider privacy, security and fairness from the beginning. Be clear about what data is used, who can access it and how decisions made with AI assistance are reviewed. Australian privacy obligations still apply when data is used to train or run models.

The goal is not to use AI. The goal is to solve a business problem — AI is one of the tools for doing it.

5. Scale what works

Once a pilot proves its value, invest in making it production-ready: reliable data pipelines, monitoring, integration with existing systems and training for the people who will use it. This is where AI moves from an experiment to a lasting capability.
